The Innovation Hub Management Company will be hosting the GAP Medical Health Innovation Challenge for the public and private health sector whose main objective is to identify and nurture health innovations that will contribute to the improvement of health service delivery within hospitals.

Medical practitioners working at hospitals in South Africa encounter numerous challenges on a daily basis. These challenges are an opportunity for the development of innovative solutions that have the potential for significant impact on the provision of health services to the people of Gauteng and South Africa at large. Most of the service delivery enabling solutions identified by the healthcare staff and researchers remain unknown and untapped, resulting in poor health services in the country. It is with this background that The Innovation Hub seeks to support and showcase innovations in the health sector, pertaining primarily to hospital care. This approach will foster a culture of innovation, where the innovations are nurtured and applied by the hospitals.

The objective of this challenge is to:

Foster innovation in the health sector, particularly in public hospitals in Gauteng

Address challenges in the hospital setting through innovative solutions

Create a platform for peer-to-peer engagement on challenges in health care delivery

Showcase innovations developed by the hospital staff that are intimate with the challenges

Identify and support research developed by Universities and Science Councils with applications in the health sector

South Africa’s scientists and engineers are amongst the top in the world. Yet few technologies are translated into commercial products/ services. The Innovation Hub Management Company (TIHMC) and the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA) have joined forces to deliver a stimulating entrepreneurial workshop for potential technology entrepreneurs and startups. The workshop will assist potential GAP entrants with developing a strong proposal. It is also a prerequisite for those intending to enter the TIA Swiss SA Venture Leader programme. Local industry experts in technology commercialization will share their knowledge on topics ranging from idea generation to funding a venture. Join us to take your technology idea or innovation to the next level.

The closing date for applications to join the training was 03 April 2017.

The GAP Medical: Health Innovation Challenge is being conducted in partnership with Philips and the World Innovation Day.

Royal Philips of the Netherlands is a diversified technology company, focused on improving people’s lives through meaningful innovation in the areas of Healthcare, Consumer Lifestyle and Lighting. The company is a leader in cardiac care, acute care and home healthcare, energy efficient lighting solutions and new lighting applications, as well as male shaving and grooming and oral healthcare. In March 2014, Philips announced the launch of an Africa Innovation Hub in Nairobi, Kenya which is working on the creation of new inventions as well bringing these inventions to market. The Philips Africa Innovation Hub is performing application-focused scientific and user studies to address key challenges like improving access to lighting and affordable healthcare as well as developing innovations to meet the aspirational needs of the rising middle class in Africa.

The World Innovation Day is a global initiative established to detect, qualify, reward, valorize and monetize solutions discovered by the health care staff and university researchers that would have remained otherwise anonymous and unexploited by the hospital. GAP Medical will be aligned with this mission. Competing on a global scale will create a platform for South Africans to share and showcase their innovations globally and contribute toward improving health sector challenges across various countries. Winners from GAP Medical will be put forward to the event to compete against finalists from our innovation partners in AsiaNorth America, and Europe.
